Leaders understand that not every man can be fashioned to his ultimate perfection. There are two principles that the Leader uses to assess those who will aspire to become their personal best; searching observation and careful listening. The observant leader will: 1. Examine capacity and resolve 2. Watch practice versus ability 3. Determine the inquisitive from the critical This process of proper selection is not accomplished in days and weeks; the work is a continual effort over a sustained period of time. Actions are a by-product of leadership; the supporting cast cannot be assessed by the past. Their ability to respond to the call of a true leader is their only measuring stick. A leader is judged by the actions of his team; therefore a wise leader chooses carefully. The team also chooses; the leader must be clear, precise, and unwavering in his vision. How will the leader proceed in the assembling of his team; can one repeat the leader’s message in a sentence? These two aspects direct the outcome.
Leadership is not an assignment or promotion it is a challenge taken on by those who have a clear vision. The selection of a leader is not predicated on past accomplishments, and product “process” alone; it is determined by the character, commitment, and confidence, of the individual. Confidence is the two-sided coin in which self-confidence is juxtaposed against the confidence of the entire community being led. As the community’s confidence grows so to does the ability of the leader to affect change. Confidence can be measured, perceptions can be gauged and changed; leadership can be developed but it cannot be instilled. Therefore before a program is launched or a team developed a commitment to finding a true leader must be undertaken. Most programs fail through ineffective implementation, not the viability of the cause. Effective implementation rests upon the leaders; this is not the same as “those who are in charge.” If you want to assess the probability of an endeavor’s success, watch the process by which they choose their leader.
